Primarily, Point Break '15 has some notion about being a story of Johnny's seduction by the fast-paced life of beatific enlightenment-seeker Bodhi (Édgar Ramírez, the worst he's ever been), despite his certainty that Bodhi is the leader of a group of extreme athletes/robbers. You would not think that this plot would be very taxing, since the '91 movie devoted about twenty minutes to it and still felt more than complete, but Wimmer and first-time director Ericson Core lose the thread entirely. Which in this movie, does very much mean X-Treme, since everything that happens in the movie resembles a big budget Mountain Dew ad devised by cocaine addicts. Point Break, then as now, is about an FBI agent, Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) - his made-up YouTube name, we learn in the first of many points where the film sounds like an 80-year-old man confidently identifying what The Kids Today enjoy - who has a background in sports, which makes him a good candidate to infiltrate a group of bank robbers/extreme athletes. Not "because of the rest of the plot", for the new screenplay by Kurt Wimmer - last seen mauling an early '90s classic to death when he wrote the 2012 remake of Total Recall - doesn't care about that, either. Once you've taken that out of the equation, I have to wonder why even bother. It is, as it turns out, possible to tell a version of this story in which there is no homoeroticism, not even the basic nugget of a thoroughly hetero bromance. ![]() It would be hard to run down a list of all the worst-case-scenarios the film manages to fulfill, though surely not least is the thoroughness with which the movie misses all the points of Kathryn Bigelow's sleek and sweaty 1991 original. Christmas Day is late to make an end run for Worst Movie of the Year laurels, but the remake of Point Break holds nothing back in making sure it was the strongest possible candidate for that dishonor. ![]() ![]() For additional streaming services, Apple, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and Linktree. So for this week’s episode, Neil and I discuss the inclusion of new characters, the all-new setting of Camena, and how this sequel inevitably ties into the lineage of that which came before it. Together, the two head up to the island where Riley must set up a transmitter, and after a short minigame where I must find the signal using both analog sticks, Oxenfree II teases its hand: a mysterious bolt of energy, almost like lightning, shoots out of the transmitter and toward a triangular, prismatic shred in the skyline above Edwards Island. And while the game’s narrative will eventually become interwoven with the originals, OXENFREE II is a game that newcomers can enjoy without feeling overly alienated. OXENFREE II picking up five years after the original game’s events, the player may be surprised by how little OXENFREE II is concerned with dredging up the past.Īllowing the sequel to explore new characters and a more extensive setting allows OXENFREE II to stand on its own right rather than being a conventional sequel. Rather than directly continuing Alex’s journey in the original, the player meets newcomer Riley, who has taken a summer job in her coastal hometown of Camena. If you had played the original Oxenfree, you’d have more insight into what is happening and pick-up nods to past events, but it is absolutely not required. Color me surprised when I discovered that OXENFREE II: Lost Signals is largely a standalone sequel crafting a wholly new story that doesn’t require the original to play. And as studios emphasize building franchises, sequels that are an immediate continuation of what came before it is almost entirely the industry’s standard approach. Sequels that co-exist within an established game world but can be enjoyed on their own. The concept of a standalone sequel feels like a relic of a bygone era. ![]() ![]() ![]() To use a center-tapped secondary, as most tube power amplifier power supplies do, we leave the following parts off the PCB. ![]() The schematic shows the full-wave bridge setup, where a secondary without a center-tap is used. Here is the complete schematic for the PS-11. (Most existing tube power amplifiers cannot support DC voltages for all the heaters, as their power transformer heater winding voltage is too low and its current rating too weak to suffer the rectification losses.) The PS-11 does hold, however, a two-resistor voltage divider and capacitor shunted circuit to reference DC voltage to the AC heater winding, which helps prevent hum. No heater power supply is provided, as the 6.3Vac winding is used to power the heaters in most tube-based power amplifiers. A quick rule of thumb might be that the zener should draw about half the current as the driver stage. The zener current limits should never be approached, save at turn-on, when no tubes are conducting yet. By using four zener break voltages, we can select the shunt regulated driver-stage voltage in 25-volt increments. These last two voltage outputs also use RC filtering that hold 47♟/500V capacitors, bypassed by 2.2♟/630V capacitors polypropylene capacitors. The input-stage output cascades from the driver stage, so it can benefits from the regulation. ![]() The driver stage offers the option shunt regulation of the voltage with a string of zeners. On the other hand, we could leave resistor R9 off the PCB and attaches the leads from an external choke instead. ![]() The RC resistor can be shunted by an optional 12V zener, which would function much like a swinging choke, as at idle the RC filter scrubs away ripple, but at full output the zener engages thus, the output tubes do not see their B+ voltage collapse, as the zener's engaging stops the voltage from dropping any further across the RC resistor. Here is the simplified and truncated schematic of the circuit after the rectifiers. Each 470F/250V capacitor is shunted by a 110k/3W bleeder resistor that also ensures equal voltage division between capacitors. The output stage consists of two 470F/250V capacitors (C7 & C8) in series, making for a total of 235♟ of capacitance and a 500V rating, which then travels through a an RC filter (R9, C11, C12) that holds the same two 470♟ capacitors in series both sides are bypassed by 2.2♟/630V capacitors polypropylene capacitors. The PS-11 makes building a tube power amplifier much easier, as it provides three output voltages taps: one for the output tubes, one for the driver stage, and one for the input stage. Well, the workaround is not to use metal standoffs, replacing them with nylon standoffs, which I fortunately have. How had I failed to list them at the store? Well, after finding my assembled test build of the PS-11 PCB, I discovered my previous reasoning for withholding the release: the rectifier circuit pads at the bottom of the PCB were too close to the mounting hole.Įverything was great, until a metal 1/4 inch standoff was attached to the PCB. Had I sold out and never made more PCBs? I found the files for the user guide and, then, I found the PCBs, which were made nine years ago. He could not find it at the GlassWare-Yahoo store-nor could I. He planned on running 6.3Vac on all the heaters and required a high-voltage power supply capable of withstanding a B+ voltage of 440Vdc. A customer asked which GlassWare power supply would be best suited for his rebuild of an old tube power amplifier he owned.
